Is EigenLayer (EIGEN) halal?
EigenLayer is a restaking protocol on Ethereum that lets stakers re-pledge their staked ETH to provide security to other protocols (AVSs) for additional yield. EIGEN is the governance token. Restaking compounds the staking-yield question and introduces slashing risk on multiple layers. Conservative AAOIFI-aligned reading flags both the staking-yield base layer and the AVS reward layer; combined, this fails our riba gate.

Verdict
Per AAOIFI-aligned framework, our screening shows: Per AAOIFI-aligned framework, our screening excludes EIGEN. Restaking compounds staking-yield concerns and adds compounding slashing gharar.
Our framework uses an AAOIFI-aligned methodology, with Saudi Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta and leading Saudi Islamic banks guidance.
Gate-by-gate analysis
Riba (interest)
FailRestaking distributes additional yield on top of base staking yield. Both layers are flagged under conservative riba reading.
Gharar (uncertainty)
FailSlashing across multiple AVSs introduces compounding loss-vectors that are difficult to price ex ante.
Maysir (gambling)
PassSpot purchase is direct ownership of a defined asset, not a wager. Our bot never places leverage, futures, perpetuals, options, or margin trades — eliminating the maysir vector at execution.
Haram-sector exposure
FailYield-on-yield protocol; structural compounding of staking-yield concerns.
Liquidity
PassEIGEN has sufficient liquidity, but gate failures are decisive.
Final verdict
Per AAOIFI-aligned framework, our screening excludes EIGEN. Restaking compounds staking-yield concerns and adds compounding slashing gharar.
Caveats and notes
- Restaking is not the same as spot ETH ownership.
- Slashing risk across multiple AVSs is structurally complex.
