Stop-loss price

How we got there
- Dollar risk per trade: 3% of $10,000 = $300
- Risk per unit: $50,000 − $46,500 = $3,500
- Units before concentration cap: $300 ÷ $3,500 = 0.0857 units = $4,286
- Concentration cap hit. Tier limit caps single-asset exposure at $2,500 (25% of portfolio). Position trimmed.
- Final position: $2,500 (42.9% of portfolio if uncapped)
Halal sizing rule: spot only, no leverage, max single-asset cap per tier. Maximum dollar risk is fixed as a percentage of portfolio — so the position size scales with portfolio, not with conviction. Conviction is expressed via tier choice, not position bloat.
The trade you size correctly is the one you survive
Most retail crypto traders obsess about entry price. The experienced ones obsess about position size. Here's why: if your entry is wrong but your size is right, you take a small loss and move on. If your entry is right but your size is wrong, a normal volatility move can wipe out years of gains. Position size is the variable that decides whether a bad week ends your portfolio or just dents it.
For a halal investor the calculus is the same — but with one added discipline: spot only, no leverage, ever. That removes the most common “solution” people reach for when they want a bigger position than their portfolio supports. You can't margin into a 5x position. You have to size correctly the first time.
This calculator does the arithmetic for you. Enter your portfolio size, pick your tier (Conservative, Moderate, or Multi-X — each carries a different default risk per trade), then enter the entry price. The output is the exact dollar position size and unit count that satisfies both the tier's risk-per-trade rule and the tier's concentration cap.
Two rules. One number.
Rule 1 — risk per trade
Conservative risks 2% of portfolio per trade. Moderate 3%. Multi-X 4%. The bot never lets a single trade lose more than that — the stop-loss is sized so the dollar loss equals exactly the tier risk budget.
Rule 2 — concentration cap
Conservative caps single-asset exposure at 33% of portfolio. Moderate 25%. Multi-X 20%. Even if the risk-per-trade math allows a bigger position, the concentration cap clips it. This is what stops one bad coin from breaking everything.
The output position size is the smaller of the two — whichever rule binds first. For small portfolios, rule 1 usually binds. For large portfolios on a single high-conviction asset, rule 2 binds. The calculator shows you which rule is active so you know what's constraining the size.
No leverage, no exceptions
Conventional position-sizing calculators usually assume you might use margin. They'll happily tell you to put 80% of your equity into one position because the math works on paper. For a halal investor that's irrelevant — margin is debt, debt is riba, riba is haram.
This calculator is built for spot-only sizing. Every position is assumed to be a fully-settled spot purchase using cash you already have. There's no debt, no margin call, and no liquidation cascade. A stop-loss can reduce downside in normal market conditions, but fast markets can gap through it. The point is to size the position before risk reaches the account.
The downside discipline is the upside discipline. Knowing the worst case is bounded means you can hold through volatility without panic-selling. The trader who respects position sizing is the trader who survives the cycle.
$10,000 portfolio, Moderate tier, BTC at $50,000
- Step 1 — risk budget. Moderate risks 3% per trade. 3% of $10,000 = $300 dollar risk.
- Step 2 — stop-loss. Default Moderate stop is 7%. Stop price = $50,000 × 0.93 = $46,500. Loss per BTC = $3,500.
- Step 3 — units. $300 risk ÷ $3,500 per BTC = 0.0857 BTC.
- Step 4 — dollar position. 0.0857 BTC × $50,000 = $4,286. That's 42.9% of the portfolio.
- Step 5 — concentration check. Moderate caps single-asset exposure at 25% = $2,500. $4,286 exceeds the cap, so the position is trimmed to $2,500.
- Final position: 0.05 BTC, $2,500 value, ~$175 dollar risk if stop hits (smaller than the 3% rule allowed because the cap binds first).
Common questions
Can I override the default stop-loss?+
Yes — there’s a slider to set a custom stop. Tighter stops mean smaller positions. Wider stops mean bigger positions but bigger absolute losses if the stop hits. The risk budget stays constant either way.
Why is concentration capped lower for higher tiers?+
Because Multi-X holds higher-volatility assets. A 33% concentration in BTC is fine; a 33% concentration in a mid-cap would be reckless. The cap scales inversely with tier volatility.
Does this work for fractional shares of low-priced coins?+
Yes. The calculator outputs unit counts at any precision needed. Binance supports fractional positions across the universe — there’s no minimum-unit constraint at the position-sizing layer.
Is risk-per-trade a halal concept?+
It’s a discipline borrowed from professional trading, not from fiqh — but it aligns naturally with the halal mandate to avoid excessive gharar. Both schools of thought converge on ‘don’t risk what you can’t afford to lose’.
What if the same coin is already in my portfolio?+
The concentration cap applies across all positions in the same asset. Add what you already hold to the new position when checking the cap. Our automated bot handles this internally; if you’re sizing manually, do the addition yourself.
