🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia — how this works
B2C digital services from non-resident providers are subject to ZATCA VAT at 15%. Collected by the merchant of record at checkout. The customer pays the inclusive price; the merchant remits VAT to ZATCA.
Collected by HalalCrypto / merchant of record at checkout. You pay the total inclusive price.
Estimates only. Final tax depends on your actual residency, billing address, and any business-use status. The displayed rate is the standard B2C rate for digital services. Consult a tax adviser for binding figures.
Consumption tax 101 for SaaS
When a non-resident company sells a digital service to a consumer in a particular country, that country generally wants its consumption tax. The rate, the rules, and who collects it vary by jurisdiction — but the principle is consistent: the tax is on the consumer, and the merchant of record is responsible for collecting it at checkout.
For HalalCrypto subscriptions, the merchant of record handles this automatically. You see the inclusive total at checkout, pay it once, and the merchant remits the tax to the relevant authority. There's nothing extra for you to file, and no surprise bill later.
What this estimator does is preview that inclusive total before you reach checkout, so you know exactly what you'll pay in your country.
The six jurisdictions covered
🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia — VAT 15%.
ZATCA requires non-resident digital service providers to register and collect 15% VAT on sales to Saudi consumers. This is one of the higher consumption-tax rates in the region — a result of the 2020 increase from 5% to 15%. For a Moderate subscription ($69/mo net), the inclusive total is $79.35/mo.
🇦🇪 UAE — VAT 5%.
The UAE has a more moderate 5% VAT, applied uniformly to digital services. Moderate subscription inclusive of UAE VAT comes to $72.45/mo.
🇺🇸 United States — varies.
Most US states do not tax SaaS for personal use. A handful (NY, TX, WA, PA, etc.) do. We've modelled an average ~5% rate across taxing states. If you're in a non-taxing state, your effective rate is 0% and the total is the published price.
🇬🇧 United Kingdom — VAT 20%.
HMRC requires non-resident digital service providers to collect 20% UK VAT on B2C sales. The UK has the highest rate of any jurisdiction in this estimator. Moderate inclusive of UK VAT is $82.80/mo.
🇮🇩 Indonesia — PPN 11%.
Indonesia's DJP (Directorate General of Taxes) introduced its digital services VAT in 2020 and raised the rate to 11% in 2022. Foreign providers register and collect; the Indonesian consumer pays an inclusive price.
🇲🇾 Malaysia — Service Tax 8%.
RMCD requires foreign digital service providers to register and charge 8% Service Tax on imported digital services to Malaysian B2C customers. The rate increased from 6% to 8% in early 2024.
Why annual billing is cheaper before tax even applies
Annual billing typically carries a 15% discount on the pre-tax subscription. Because tax is calculated on the discounted price, the absolute tax cost is also lower — meaning the saving compounds slightly: you save on the subscription, and you save on the tax that would have been charged on the saved subscription.
For a Saudi customer on Moderate, monthly billing inclusive of VAT is around $952/year. Annual billing inclusive of VAT is around $810/year. The difference is roughly two months of subscription, free.
Common questions
Is the displayed total what I’ll actually pay?+
Yes — for the listed jurisdictions, the merchant of record collects tax at checkout and you pay the inclusive total. There’s no separate tax filing for you, no surprise bill later.
What if I’m a registered business?+
B2B rules differ in most jurisdictions — typically reverse-charge VAT applies and you self-account through your normal VAT return. Provide your VAT number at checkout and the inclusive price will adjust accordingly.
What if my country isn’t listed?+
If your country has B2C digital services VAT and we’re registered there, the merchant of record collects it. If your country doesn’t apply consumption tax to non-resident SaaS, you pay the published price.
Why does the US show 5% as a placeholder?+
Because actual sales tax depends on the state, not the country. We average across taxing states to give a representative figure. If your state doesn’t tax SaaS, your effective rate is 0%.
Is VAT a halal cost?+
VAT is a state-imposed consumption tax — paying it is permissible (and required by law). It is not riba. Whether VAT itself is morally legitimate is a separate political question outside the scope of Shariah compliance for the consumer.
